Description

Commemorative cup created for the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II Alexandrovich Romanov and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. Dated 1896. Enamelled metal decorated with gilt rim and geometric design. Nicholas and Alexandra's Cyrillic cyphers on one side and the Imperial Russian eagle on the opposite. Known as the Cup of Sorrows after the distribution of the cup to over half a million people gathered in Khodynka Field caused a stampede, resulting in a devastating crush that claimed the lives of over 1,300 people. 10.5 cm (h). Condition consistent with age.
